How discounts and markups work
Both discounts and markups are percentage-based adjustments to a price. A discount reduces the price for the buyer; a markup increases the cost for the seller to set a profitable selling price.
Discount formula
sale price = original × (1 − discount / 100)
Example: 25% off $80 → $80 × 0.75 = $60 sale price (you save $20).
Markup formula
selling price = cost × (1 + markup / 100)
Example: 50% markup on $40 cost → $40 × 1.50 = $60 selling price ($20 profit).
